A farmer's son from Chandra village near Panipat in Haryana who took up athletics to shed flab, Chopra scripted history by winning the elusive medal, which the likes of late Milkha Singh and P T Usha let it slip from their grasp in 1964 and 1984 editions.

The athlete from Haryana has been honored by several state governments and private organizations for his achievement.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced a cash reward of ₹one crore for Chopra. Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Chennai Super Kings also announced a reward of ₹one crore for the athlete. “As a mark of appreciation and honor on his stellar achievement, CSK is awarding Rs. 1 Crore to Neeraj Chopra,” the CSK said in a statement.
