New coronavirus variant with multiple mutations detected in South Africa

Scientists in South Africa said on Thursday they have detected a new COVID-19 variant, B.1.1.529, with multiple mutations. The National Institute for Communicable Diseases has confirmed that 22 positive cases of the variant have been recorded in the country. "It's not surprising that a new variant has been detected in South Africa," said Professor Adrian Puren, NICD Acting Executive Director.
