Researchers from two US universities said that the giant rock formations through Moon's mantle could have produced interior convection leading to the generation of strong magnetic fields. The scientists said that Moon was likely covered by an ocean of molten rock. When this began to cool and solidify, dense minerals sank while less dense minerals floated to form the crust.
