"Taiwanese chipmaker MediaTek is gunning for the premium segment in coming years, taking on formidable US rivals Qualcomm and Apple with the launch of its latest line-up of flagship mobile processors focussing on high performance and generative AI capabilities, a top executive said."
Our revenues increased from $7.9 billion to $14 billion in calendar 2023 globally. A big milestone this year is that we've been able to generate $1 billion in revenue from our flagship chipsets globally," MediaTek India managing director Anku Jain told ET.
Globally, MediaTek enjoys a lion's share of the mobile processor market - 30% in terms of volumes. As per Cybermedia Research, as many as 20 million MediaTek-powered phones were shipped to India in Q3 2023, capturing 46% market share, compared to 12 million powered by Qualcomm, which had 27% market share in volume terms.
It is now looking to lead the generative AI space with its latest chipset that has the capability to run a 33-billion parameter large language model, a key ingredient in ChatGPT-like apps.
While most of the company's India revenues come from the mobile phone business, it's also increasingly seeing the IoT (internet of things) segment growing in terms of revenue.
We are working with both operators to power their fixed-wireless access (FWA) products, which is quite important for a market like India, especially in rural areas which do not have good fibre connectivity," Jain said.
